CareShare provides adults age 60 and older, living in North Fulton County, with the non-medical help and support they need to remain independent and in their own homes. There is no charge for services secured through the CareShare program. Instead, when a senior member needs a service (for example, transportation to a doctor's appointment or help with grocery shopping), CareShare locates a volunteer who can provide that assistance.
This unique SCS Program focuses on the importance of reconnecting with the community and brings about a sense of involvement which breaks the isolation sometimes felt by seniors. The reciprocation aspect of the CareShare program unites the community in a "pay-it-forward" equation that is working to keep Atlanta's seniors more independent and involved in the community where they live.
CareShare Exchange was conceived in 1992 by the National Council of Jewish Women (Atlanta Section) and St. Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta and joined Senior Citizen Services in 2005. That first year of program operation within the SCS menu of services resulted in over 110 matches and over 4200 volunteer hours.
CareShare helps the elderly meet the challenges of aging with dignity and self-respect by replacing the stigma of receiving charity with this model of reciprocity. This means that in addition to receiving services, seniors have the opportunity to share their talents and contribute to the community.
• If your mind is active but you don't have the energy or the physical ability to do
household chores.
• If you can no longer drive and can't afford frequent taxis to take you to the doctor or the grocery store.
• If you could use a hand hanging a picture.
• If you'd just like someone to share a cup of coffee and chat.
CareShare volunteers are wonderful folks who understand the positive difference they can make in the lives of our senior clients: transporting someone to appointments or visits with friends or family; assisting with grocery shopping or light cooking; letter writing and reading; telephone reassurance, friendly visiting; sharing a game of cards, chess or bridge; giving a member's primary caregiver a needed break; light housekeeping and organizing living space; and specific requests as they develop.
