Wisdom Works Senior-to-Senior Volunteer Project
Senior Citizen Services has provided the HOMES (Home Owner Maintenance and Enhancement for Seniors) Program for five years. Volunteers from organizations such as Hands On Atlanta and UPS continue to serve the program well. But, we have many more requests than we can serve at the present time.
The HOMES program is looking for volunteers over age 50 to assist in its Wisdom Works: Building Better Communities Grant. This program will utilize new retirees to perform minor home repairs for seniors who cannot do the repairs themselves. The senior-to-senior volunteers will do interior and exterior painting, yard clean up, and gutter cleaning, as well as other minor home repairs. They work in small, self-directed groups throughout metropolitan Atlanta.
Volunteers will work in small, self-directed groups to perform needed projects at homes throughout metropolitan Atlanta.
Wisdom Works: Building Better Communities
The National Council on Aging (NCOA), in partnership with MetLife Foundation, has awarded a grant of $25,000 to Senior Citizen Services of Metropolitan Atlanta. Only six centers out of 150 across the country were selected to receive a grant to develop self-directed teams of older adults who will identify and address community problems. These teams will be developed through leadership training based in new models of civic engagement. A particular focus of this work will be on recruiting newly retired “Baby Boomers” to perform meaningful volunteer services.
Because a major focus of the program is to encourage new community partnerships, the center will be conducting the program in association with the Atlanta Community Tool Bank, Berkeley Park Neighborhood Association, Hands on Atlanta, BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Atlanta), Senior Connections, and several churches and other community organizations.
